Niangua River in Lebanon: It’s one of those places that feels like it couldn’t possibly be this close to Springfield. Just 1 hour north of here, the river is spring-fed and wonderfully cold, winding through a tree-lined corridor that’s especially gorgeous in October.
If you’re a local, you know Niangua can have a reputation as a party spot. But we found a very family-friendly canoe rental company: Riverfront Campground & Canoe. This spot was clean, organized, had great bathrooms and even a coffee shop. As a somewhat nervous mom, I loved that Niangua is not wildly remote or intimidating for first-timers. Much of it is shallow. When we went, there were enough families and small groups on the water that it felt friendly and safe, not “you’re on your own out here” Deliverance vibes, you know what I mean?
The whole process was seamless: reserve online, park at the campground, get assigned a canoe, and hop on the water. At the end of the trip, you’ll pull off at the designated spot and catch an old school bus back to your car at the starting point. The outfitter says the river is floatable through October, and fall is a beautiful time to go. They’re open for floats until October 31.
Is your kid old enough? They recommend children be at least 2 years old and accompanied by a good swimmer. Life vests are provided—including one-size child vests—but bring your own if you want to ensure a good fit.

- Your own child-sized life vest if you’re unsure about the fit
Are your babies too young? Here’s a calmer spot on the Finley featured a few weeks ago. It’s closer to Springfield, has a parking lot within steps of the water, and plenty of shallows for littles to toddle around.
