A climbing kid’s paradise, this tucked-away park in Jordan Valley is called K-Park

Jordan Valley Park is usually on every parent’s summer list — all splash pads and stream play — but it turns out this downtown spot has a completely different life in the fall. I learned this by accident.

I was attempting to find the Jordan Valley Greenway Trail, and ended up at the park by mistake. Instead of turning around, followed the paved path past the dry fountain and the brick steps.

A few minutes in, I realized I’d found something worth sharing: a tucked-away corner with big climbing rocks, gentle hills, and space for a kid to scramble, roll, and explore — no water shoes required. It’s called K-Park, dedicated as such due to the massive metal sculpture amid the play structures called K-Man, created by artist Russ RuBert.

It nook features a huge climbing rock for children with a great view of Hammons Tower! Further up the path is a giant wagon play structure (a nod to the Springfield Wagon Co. history), complete with a slide. This park was well worth a visit, and Leo loved scrabbling down the dried-up waterfall and rolling down the gentle hills.

A paved path that connects to the Jordan Valley Greenway Trail makes this great for stroller walks. There’s also a collection of picnic tables, so it can work for playdates or bigger gatherings.

Bonus Adventure: Head to Midtown Carnegie Library after

Drive 4 minutes north of this park to the Midtown Carnegie Library, where kids can warm up on a cold day or parents can rest after a walk. The kids’ section is stocked with toys and puppets, and there’s a private bathroom just for families.
