On chilly February days in Springfield, sometimes I need to get out of the house with my preschooler.
Often, we search “things to do in Springfield with kids” and pick one of the many destinations to explore. But just as often, I don’t want to organize an enrichment outing and stand on the sidelines while my child gawks at the aquarium or the zoo.
Sometimes, I want the day to be about me. I want to have headspace to think, creamy latte in hand, in a comfortable, warm spot.
Lately, I’ve been reveling in a coffee shop “study hall” — I bring sticker books, art supplies, and my laptop, and we camp for a couple of hours. Until recently, I never would have believed this would be so enjoyable.
I send a “things to do” email every Sunday night to tons of moms in the Springfield, Mo. area. It’s full of free, often outdoorsy ideas that always match the season we’re in.
They say coffee shops are a “third place” where people can linger between home and work. Well, I stopped lingering at fun coffee shops once I had a baby, constantly worrying about bothering others with cries (mostly mine) and mess.
Older, wiser me realizes that parents should never feel apologetic about babies and toddlers.
Take your kids to the coffee shop. Take over a table. If it’s in the budget, get them a treat.

We call it “studying” at the coffee shop. I bring a laptop and notebook, and I expect to be interrupted. But he’s shocked me with long sessions of focus.
PSA: As a former waitress, families who put their tables back in order before leaving are royalty.
Tip for preschoolers and up: Bring a tablet and queue up Art for Kids Hub on YouTube. These videos are fantastic. The artist always has a kid in the video, and he teaches them how to draw something simple. Leo is obsessed, and he’s getting quite good at drawing!
Location: Any coffee shop near you! Kingdom Coffee on Lone Pine has great tables, an outdoor patio, and is steps to the Galloway walking trail. We take a walk afterwards, and I always bring home a happy kid. Or you can start at Sequiota Park and walk towards the coffee shop. Their tables fill fast, so go super early or in the afternoon to avoid the 10 a.m. crowd.
