Dan Kinney: The perfect playground for sunny winter days

Of all the parks in Springfield, the one we return to most often is the playground at Dan Kinney Family Center.

Is it the most scenic park in town? No. You won’t find dramatic hills or towering pines. But what you will find is wide-open sunshine and enough built-in features to keep both toddlers and big kids happy for a visit.

Here’s what to know before you go.

I send a “things to do” email every Sunday night to tons of moms in the Springfield, Mo. area. It’s full of free, often outdoorsy ideas that always match the season we’re in.

Where is Dan Kinney Family Center?

The playground sits on the grounds of Dan Kinney Family Center, a Springfield-Greene County Park Board facility on the southeast side of town. It’s super close to Sam’s Club if you’re ever on that side of town!

With its smooth playground and baseball field surface and heavy-duty swing seats that accommodate a range of users, Dan Kinney feels welcoming and fun for kids with different mobility needs.

What makes this playground special?

Sunshine in the winter

Dan Kinney’s playground is relatively open, which means it gets excellent sun exposure, a gift during cold Ozark winters.

In summer, that same openness means it runs hot midday. Be prepared to camp in meager shade.

A playground that works for multiple ages

The playground structure includes multiple slides, climbing walls and ladders, and plenty of unusual features to hang, spin, step, and swing.

Leo insists it has the best swings in Springfield. I’m not about to argue with a five-year-old who has tested them all.

The 1/3-size baseball field

One of Dan Kinney’s most underrated features is its small-scale baseball field with a cushioned synthetic surface. It was designed so players using wheelchairs, walkers, or with mobility challenges can run, hit, and play alongside friends.

It’s also a perfect place to practice T-ball, run bases, make up lap games, or test scooter skills.

Plus, Leo loves those mini bleachers and small stair sets. He went up and down while I got a place to sit and supervise.

A short walking trail

There’s a small paved walking path looping the area, just enough for small-scale nature walks with little legs or preschool bike rides. It’s not a long trail, but it’s manageable and close to the playground.

Tips before you go

  • Bring a lawn chair if you have toddlers. The picnic tables sit a bit far from the main play structure and are often in direct sun. A portable chair lets you choose your vantage point.
  • Consider early morning or late afternoon during hotter months.
  • Bring balls or scooters for the baseball field and open pavement nearby.
