Valley Water Mill is one of Springfield’s best kid-friendly walks

Some days call for a full-scale outdoor adventure. Others call for a lake loop and a French Silk latte.

In north Springfield, just a few miles away from city blocks and highway noise, there’s a 1.5-mile loop walk that feels like a sample-size serving of our unique Ozarks ecosystems.

Valley Water Mill Park is part paved, part rugged. The trail circles a 13-acre lake, crosses a creek, and wends through forest, prairie, wetland, and glade terrain, keeping kids engaged as they encounter new sights at every turn of the path.

I send a “things to do” email every Sunday night to tons of moms in the Springfield, Mo. area. It’s full of free, often outdoorsy ideas that always match the season we’re in.

It’s long enough to feel like you had a full, robust outing, without being so long that little legs give out. Take the whole hike, or don’t. Maybe it’s just the paved portion for an easy out-and-back stroller walk. Maybe it’s the creek bed south of the lake, where moss clings to stones and kids inevitably start throwing rocks and arguing over walking sticks. Maybe it’s fishing off the pier, with sandwiches and a cooler of Capri Sun.

What makes it special?

  • Paved sections that flank the large lake with bridge and dam views
  • A bluff overlook that made my palms sweat
  • Varying terrain and mini bridges
  • Fishing piers and accessible docks — the lake is stocked with bass, bluegill and catfish
  • Easy parking and indoor bathrooms

Coffee and treats strategy

There are two stops nearby worth considering.

  • Echelon Coffee – A traditional sit-down spot with a gorgeous pastry case as well as breakfast and lunch options. (2407 N Glenstone Ave, Springfield, MO 65803)
  • Dark Stone Coffee – A drive-thru cart with an amazing French Silk latte that I’ve been thinking about for at least 6 months. (1826 E Turner St, Springfield, MO 65803)

Make it a half-day adventure

If you want to stretch the outing into a full-blown field trip, pair this outdoor spot with a trip to the Air & Military Museum of the Ozarks (2305 E Kearney St, Springfield, MO 65803), just minutes away. Kids under 5 are free, 6-11 are $4 and adults are $6. They’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 12-4 p.m.
