If the words Toys “R” Us still bring to mind colorful aisles, Christmas catalogs, and warm nostalgia, then here’s some good news: A new store is coming to Battlefield Mall in Springfield.
The mall’s directory lists Toys “R” Us as “coming soon” at 2825 S. Glenstone Ave. The new store has its own listing alongside the existing Toys “R” Us shop on the second floor of Macy’s. The Springfield Daily Citizen reported that the store is slated for the former Forever 21 space on the west side of the mall, near the dining area.
For Springfield families, it’s another chapter in a toy story that once played out just down the road. The city’s former Toys “R” Us stood at 1425 E. Battlefield Road, near the intersection with Fremont Avenue. That store closed in June 2018 during the chain’s nationwide shutdown of its traditional U.S. stores.
The brand returned to Springfield in 2022 through its partnership with Macy’s, bringing a smaller toy shop inside the department store.
Now, a separate storefront is on the way as the company makes a much bigger push into American shopping centers. In September, Toys “R” Us announced plans for 120 additional standalone stores nationwide for the 2026 holiday season through a partnership with Go! Retail Group.
The company says the new stores will stock toys, collectibles, and gifts from brands including LEGO, Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Pokémon.
A toy shopping hub in Springfield
The location also adds to a handy little hub for toy shopping in Springfield. Directly across the street from the mall, HobbyTown at 3065 S. Glenstone Ave. has one of the town’s largest toy collections, with high-quality brands like Schleich, Brio, and Melissa & Doug. They also have tons of puzzles and games.
Beside it, Barnes & Noble, at 3055 S. Glenstone Ave., has a substantial selection of toys, games, and puzzles in addition to its children’s book section.
In the Brentwood Center adjacent to the mall is Jellybeans at 2632 S. Glenstone Ave., which has a cute, curated assortment of toys, and just down Battlefield Road is Bricks & Minifigs, a LEGO resale store.
Add the new Toys “R” Us, and families will now have several places to browse for birthday gifts and Christmas wish lists within a small stretch of town.
As of Oct. 29, Battlefield Mall’s new Toys “R” Us listing does not give an opening date or store hours.
