Doing it solo in Springfield: one baker mom’s real life

Springfield Moms, IRL with Sophia

Headphones, fantasy novels, and a fresh start in a new city — how one local mom is holding it all together right now.

Sophia, mother of one 3-year-old boy, owns a small home bakery in Springfield called Harvest to Hearth. She specializes in artisanal sourdough loaves and sweet treats.

Q: How do you spend your days right now—work, home, hobbies, or anything in between?

Solo with my kiddo. My husband is deployed. I also squeeze in as much reading and baking for my small business as I can.

Q: How do you recharge or find rest, recovery or rejuvenation?

Yoga, reading, baking, and a shower that will definitely get interrupted.

Want to share your answers to these questions? I’ve made it really simple — just answer the short list of questions in this form to be included in a future edition!

Q: What’s a podcast or creator you listen to in the cracks of your day?

“Childproof Podcast” with Gwenna Laithland and Tori Phantom. They are so real about parenting and don’t sugarcoat the hilarious and not-so-glamorous parts of parenthood.

Q: What tiny luxury do you treat yourself to when you can?

The carwash and drive-thru coffee. Roots or Sips and Scoops are definitely my go-to coffee shops. Local is very important to me.

Q: What’s your child deeply into this month?

Whales. Everything “deep blue sea”. We are loving “Wild Kratts” and reading ocean encyclopedias

Q: Is there a book, show, or series you’re turning to at the end of the day?

I’m a dark romance reader and have really been leaning on fantasy to give me an escape.

Q: What’s an everyday product that makes your life 5% easier?

All-in-one washer and dryer. I’m loving that I can start it and come back to clean, dry laundry at the end of the day, and I don’t have to remember to switch it. No more mildewy clothes and towels.

Q: What’s your go-to cheap or no-cost outing around Springfield?

The Missouri Institute of Natural Science is free and has a scavenger hunt for both kids and adults. They have real, completed dinosaur fossils and a nature trail where you can look for your own fossils. I went as a kid, and my kiddo loves it even more, especially paired with a dinosaur book.

Q: What dinner in your rotation always gets eaten without complaint?

Chicken Noodle Soup. I follow the recipe on the back of the Reames Frozen Egg Noodles bag. It’s the same way I’ve eaten it since I was a kid.

Q: What’s helping you feel grounded in this season of life?

My headphones.

Sophia’s community request:

I have a neurodivergent kiddo and would love resources for other families with disabilities. We just moved from out of state, and finding a new community has been very challenging.

I send a “things to do” email every Sunday night to tons of moms in the Springfield, Mo. area. It’s full of free, often outdoorsy ideas that always match the season we’re in.
